Guareschi and his Moto Guzzi racing team arrived to Daytona Beach last weekend with little more than a racebike and the determination to take home trophies in BOTT and Sound of Thunder races. There was no factory transporter or umbrella girls for them. They had no “B” bike or even an extra motor. The Guzzi team’s apparently unsophisticated methods surely belied the expert preparation job that the bike received prior to its arrival at Daytona International Speedway.
You don’t just show up with any old bike in the back of your truck and ride it to 150+ MPH speeds at the mighty Daytona, do you?
The MGS01 successfully won BOTT F1 on Monday against a swarm of 1000cc 2 valve Ducati Sport Classics. I mentioned to team member Giaofranco (#2) at tech inspection that NCR/Ducati was supposedly bringing a number of the Sport Classics to race in F1 and SOT with Larry Pegram, Valter Bartolini and Nick Ienatsch signed up for battle. His surprised expression revealed that he hadn’t heard that bit of news. It all turned out well for the MGS01 team, though. I could tell that Giaofranco #1 was excited after the race as I heard him exclaiming into his cell phone afterwards “I beat-a Peg-a-ram, I beat-a Peg-a-ram”.
Two races later, Pegram brought out the heavy machinery (his Formula Extreme 749) and came away with a huge lead and a solid victory over the MGS01. Still, Guareschi managed to hold off the other 1000cc 2 valve NCR’s, and claim a 2nd place trophy.
On the second day of racing, Guareschi once again managed the win in BOTT F1.
At one point, I was on my Ducati Pantah entering the International Horseshoe. Pegram came by in 1st, followed by Guareschi. I found out after the race that Guareschi has caught Pegram again towards the end of the race and taken his 2nd victory in BOTT F1.
The last race of the day found Guareschi finishing 3rd behind Bartolini and Pegram. The NCR team, with its 10 member support crew, large paddock space and huge financial backing from Ducati had finally wrestled the 1-2 finish from the Guzzi team. No matter, though- the Guzzi team had 4 trophies from the 4 races that they entered, which was no small feat. Best of all they made it look easy, with a minimum of trackside support from Piaggio or Moto Guzzi. Imagine what this team could do with serious resources behind it!
Guzzitech.com was also able to support the team in a small way with our MG Cup contingency cash rewards program. I’m proud to have been a small part of this momentous occasion, and I hope that the MGS01 team will return to Daytona next year to win more races and bestow more glory upon our beloved marque.
Viva Guareschi, Forza Moto Guzzi!
